Arbon

Switzerland, Sankt Gallen (➤ map)(➤ map)
A city (approx. 15,000 inhabitants) in Switzerland, located on the southern shore of Lake Constance, 13.5 km northeast of Sankt Gallen , 32 km southeast of Konstanz in Germany and 33 km west of Bregenz in Austria (➤ map)(➤ map). District capital.

The area where Arbon is located has been inhabited since prehistoric times. Remnants of fortifications have been preserved from Roman times. The history of today's Arbon dates back to the mid-thirteenth century, when the settlement existing here first obtained market rights, and then city rights.

The most important monument of Arbon is the castle (Schloss Arbon) with a 33 m high tower, dating back to the early 16th century. For centuries, the castle belonged to the bishops of Konstanz. Today it houses a regional history museum.

The main sacral monuments are: the Catholic Church of St. Martin (Katholische Pfarrei St. Martin), built in the 15th century on the site of a previously existing Romanesque basilica, later rebuilt, and the chapel of St. Gall (Gallus-Kapelle), probably dating back to the 7th century, later extended, with remains of frescoes from the 14th century.

Other highlights of Arbon include the picturesque old town, harbor and marina for small yachts and sailboats, a waterfront promenade and two museums: the Saurer Museum , with a collection of restored vehicles produced by the legendary Surer company in the years 1911-1980, and located about 2 km south-west of the city center (access via St. Gallerstrasse) MoMö Museum, where you can see the machines and equipment for the production of cider.
